Oil and gas companies (aka fossil fuel companies), energy, and the climate and nature crisis

In Conversation with Tony Meggs

During this webinar, Chair of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change, Richard Smith will ask the current Chair of Sellafield UK and former Head of Group Technology at BP, what role oil and gas (aka fossil fuel) companies have in the climate and nature crisis and what our energy mix should be in the next 20 years. Participants will also be invited to put their own questions to Mr Meggs.

About Richard and Tony:

Richard Smith is the Chair of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change. From 1979 to 2004 he worked at the BMJ and was the editor of the journal and chief executive of the BMJ Publishing Group from 1991 until he left. From 2012 to 2018 he was the chair of icddr,b, which was formerly known as the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh. Richard is chair of the Point of Care Foundation, which promotes compassionate, dignified care, and Patients Know Best (a company that brings all medical and social care records together in one place under the control of patients), and a cochair of the Lancet Commission on the Value of Death.

Tony Meggs, CB, FICE, Non-Executive Chair of Sellafield Ltd; Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Programme Review Committee, Defence Equipment & Support; advisor to S2G, a clean energy investment company. Prior to his current roles, Tony was Chairman of Crossrail Ltd, Europe’s largest metro rail project. Before that, he was CEO of the UK Government’s Infrastructure and Projects Authority, with oversight of a £600 billion portfolio of HMG’s largest and most complex projects and programmes and responsibility for building project capability within the UK government. Tony has a background in energy, with many years in conventional oil and gas exploration, development and production, followed by several years as Head of Group Technology in BP. In this role, he was responsible for corporate oversight of major projects groupwide, as well as technology development across the company. A major area of focus was the development of clean energy opportunities for BP, including the setting up of Hydrogen Energy in BP, and the Energy Biosciences Institute at Berkeley University.
